We now have this light shining in our hearts, but we
ourselves are like fragile clay jars containing this great treasure.
This makes it clear that our great power is from God,
not from ourselves. 2 Cor 4:7
At Ocilla United Methodist Church we view stewardship as a means of "pouring out" to others the gifts that come from God, out of our love for God. As God's stewards, we have three responsibilities:
- Receiving: We receive with joyful thanksgiving the many gifts that God showers upon us — time, talent, treasure, our bodies, our friendships, natural resources, and the beauty around us.
- Managing: We take good care of what we have received. We manage these resources wisely — for our own good and the good of others.
- Giving: Out of our gratitude in receiving so abundantly, we want to share with others.
Although we encourage tithing for all, we feel giving is a decision that must be reached by each family or member of our congregation. We urge our members to consider the following question: “What do I feel God is asking me to give back for the work of His church?” rather than trying to determine how much is needed to support the church’s budget.
Our budget is not developed until we feel that all contributing members have turned in their Financial Stewardship Commitment cards for the budget year. The Finance Committee then uses those commitments along with projections of undesignated giving and other sources of income to compose the budget for the coming year.
Our Financial Secretary is the only person at OUMC who knows what is given or committed by any member. The Finance Chair works closely with the Financial Secretary to monitor the giving, the commitments and the budget, but that person does not have access to the individual amounts.
We encourage each member to consider prayerfully his or her stewardship commitment to OUMC.
