It happens this Saturday, July 15, right here at Ocilla UMC. From 9:30 until around 11:30, children from 5 to about 10, (K to 5th grades) will swarm around looking to receive the blessings of Christ via fun, fellowship, school supplies and a “brown bag” lunch.
Jesus loves children! All three synoptic Gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke) carry the same story, this version is Luke’s:
15 One day some parents brought their little children to Jesus so he could touch and bless them. But when the disciples saw this, they scolded the parents for bothering him.
16 Then Jesus called for the children and said to the disciples, “Let the children come to me. Don’t stop them! For the Kingdom of God belongs to those who are like these children. 17 I tell you the truth, anyone who doesn’t receive the Kingdom of God like a child will never enter it.” (emphasis mine) Luke 18:15-17 NLT
Jesus wants to see children thrive. One of the best ways to make this happen involves our sharing the unconditional love of Christ with them, with their parents, and with each other. Children might not be able to articulate everything they see, but they understand the purity of love and the facade of hypocrisy.
Children have a great deal to teach us; humility, sharing, forgiving, growing. We could use their examples to build a community more closely resembling the Kingdom Jesus came to announce. By having grace for each other and the world, we offer a glimpse of the hope Jesus died for, one people under the perfect shelter and safety of a heavenly Father.
Many of you already volunteered to help this week. Others of you offered financial and other resources. Some offer prayers. All God needs to show us His Glory is that which we offer.
Come and enjoy the blessings for yourselves. Watch God work through your efforts to draw these children closer, to place His hands on them for blessing.
Come and see how God uses these children to bless you, to let him use their smiles, their hands to reveal His love for you!
