Today is the Sunday when we celebrate Pentecost. The disciples, hiding in fear for their lives, gathered on the 50th day after the second day of Passover week, known by the Jews as the Festival of Weeks. They didn’t know what to expect for the future. They wanted to trust God, but fear held them in its grip. Witnesses to the life, death, resurrection, and ascension of Jesus the Messiah, they couldn’t imagine what God was about to do.
Joel prophesied of the day when God would pour Himself into His people, all people, and restore the relationship He wanted with us. He writes;
I will pour out my Spirit upon all people.
Your sons and daughters will prophesy.
Your old men will dream dreams,
and your young men will see visions.
In those days I will pour out my Spirit
even on servants—men and women alike. (Joel 2:28-29 NLT)
Instead of Priests or Prophet, God would communicate with anyone who placed their faith in Him!
What a wonderful day this would be!
The Disciples suddenly understood the whole purpose of the Anointed One’s visit to the earth. Jesus left Heaven to announce the arrival of the Kingdom of God on Earth. He came to prepare us for culmination of restoration, the restoration of the Creation. In His “re-creation” God began with humans, men and women alike, preparing us for the total restoration. John described the climax of God’s Kingdom effort in the vision from the Book of Revelation;
“Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the old heaven and the old earth had disappeared. And the sea was also gone. 2And I saw the holy city, the new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven like a bride beautifully dressed for her husband. “
“3I heard a loud shout from the throne, saying, “Look, God’s home is now among his people! He will live with them, and they will be his people. God himself will be with them.” (Revelation 21:2-3 NLT)
At Pentecost God detaches from any Tabernacle, Temple, Ritual or Office and positions His Presence within His people. No longer will there be the necessity for animal sacrifice, human ritual, or special circumstance. All we need is resolute faith in Jesus Christ!
